NOW PLAYING: How does laser refractive surgery work?

Refractive surgery uses a laser to reshape the cornea so that light refracts onto your retina correctly. Light that may have focused in front of or beyond the retina will now focus on it directly giving you much clearer vision. For myopia the laser removes tissue from the center of the cornea to flatten its curvature. For hyperopia tissue is removed from the periphery of the cornea to steepen its curvature. Refractive surgery can also help people with astigmatism. Refractive surgery cannot, however, correct for presbyopia since it is a muscular condition. But there is a strategy for compensating for presbyopia using Monovision in which one eye is corrected for distance vision and one is corrected for near vision. Monovision is helpful for near tasks such as scanning a menu or article but not for prolonged reading or fine print. For active individuals, Monovision may not be suitable. Dr. Schanzlin can help you decide whether Monovision is right for you since not all patients can adjust to this vision. Patients who are interested will be tested using contact lenses.
