iFS IntraLase™

In the past, San Diego LASIK patients did not experience a truly all-laser procedure. The first step of the LASIK procedure involves creating a corneal flap, for which some surgeons use a mechanical blade, called a microkeratome. At Shiley Eye Center, we are one of a handful of San Diego practices to offer iFS IntraLase™ – the latest state of the art technology for laser flap creation – to provide the fastest, most precise and safest laser vision correction.

If you are interested in all-laser LASIK eye surgery in San Diego, call Shiley Eye Center at (858) 822-2566 to make an appointment, or request a consultation online to see one of our eye doctors.

About iFS IntraLase™

With iFS IntraLase™, a computer-controlled laser is utilized to create a thinner, cleaner flap in a matter of seconds. While the standard microkeratome technique is still used by some surgeons, Dr. David Schanzlin and our surgeons at Shiley Eye Center believe iFS IntraLase™ provides the best standard of care for our patients. It has been demonstrated through testing that the iFS IntraLase laser provides:

  • Better refractive outcomes
  • Greater flap stability
  • Better accuracy in the size and depth of the flap
  • Customization of the flap for individual patients

By replacing the hand-held microkeratome (blade) with a computer-guided beam of laser light, this new technique reduces the risk of complications associated with LASIK. In addition, more people may qualify for laser vision correction. Our San Diego surgeons can utilize the precision of iFS IntraLase™ to create flaps for patients with thin corneas, who otherwise may have been inoperable.

Your Bladeless LASIK Procedure

The computer guided iFS IntraLase™ laser acts directly upon the stromal layer of the cornea after passing through a disposable glass lens. Tiny bubbles are created at a preprogrammed depth, creating the corneal flap safely and painlessly from the inside out.

After the corneal flap is made, your surgeon will fold it back to access the underlying tissue. Either WaveFront optimized or WaveFront guided laser technology will be used to reshape the cornea based on a computerized 3D map of your eye.

The UC San Diego Shiley Eye Center is dedicated to helping you achieve your best possible vision through the latest advances in laser eye surgery. By using iFS IntraLase™, we offer totally customized laser vision correction to more patients utilizing the safest, most up-to-date technology.
