Testimonials for Dr. David Schanzlin - LASIK Surgeon

Dr. Schanzlin and the staff at the Shiley Eye Center make going through the Lasik procedure very comfortable. From the first consultation through the day of the procedure and post operation follow-up visits, I knew I was in good hands.

Going to the Shiley Eye Center and having Dr. Schanzlin correct my nearsightedness was one of the best decisions that I have ever made. Before having Lasik, I relied on glasses and/or contacts, which usually bothered me, for most of my life. As a professional beach volleyball player, on the AVP Tour, I was not only sick of dealing with contacts and glasses while training and playing, but also in my daily life. Now, after Lasik, I have a solid 20/15 in both eyes. I am no longer dependent on annoying contacts/glasses, and have noticeably improved my hand-eye movements and reaction time.

Thank you so much. I will be strongly recommending your services to my family, friends, and other professional athletes.

Sincerely,
Mike Morrison, Professional Volleyball Player

First let me start out by saying that I am a very fortunate person. I, as a Military member, received this opportunity to have Lasik surgery performed free by entering and winning a contest presented by the UCSD Shiley Eye Center and KOGO 600 AM News/Talk Radio Station here in the San Diego Area in conjunction with Operation Home Front. The only requirement was to submit an entry letter explaining "Why I deserved to win this Free Lasik Surgery." Well my entry was selected out of numerous entries. "YEA ME"

I can't begin how much better my life is now that I have 20/20 vision in both eyes. I still catch myself at times thinking I need to take out my contacts at night prior to going to sleep! Also when I wake up I can automatically see without having to put my glasses on to get around. My vision was pretty bad off (-6.25 both eyes) prior to Dr. Schanzlin performing the amazing Lasik surgery. For 40 plus years I have had to live my life with "Corrective Lenses Required" both glasses and/or contacts. It is a definite relief from all the worries of damaging my eyes from continuous prolonged contact wearing which I was guilty of.

The Lasik surgery itself was a simple painless affair, it took only about ten minutes to complete. The first couple hours after returning home from the surgery were the most sensitive time, not real painful, but a definite feeling that something had been done to my eyes. A little pain medication along with sleep was the best answer for that. Within a week after my first follow-up appointment, I was able to drive without worries during the daytime (Note: "No Corrective Lenses Required"). Nighttime driving was a little longer wait due to the "halo" effect around all lights. But within a month, utilizing all prescribed/required medicinal eye drops daily, things could not have been better. "I Can See Clearly Now" is my favorite song verse to sing.

Follow-up appointments at the Shiley Eye Center with Dr. Schanzlin will continue for approximately 1 year. All is fine with me. I can't say or thank you enough for the miracle of 20/20 vision which has been restored back to me, probably since grade four when my eyesight began diminishing. What a great Military Retirement gift you have given me. All my experiences with UCSD, Shiley Eye Center, and Dr Schanzlin have been nothing short of fantastic, they are all about professionalism and customer service. Also thank you KOGO 600 AM News/Talk Radio for presenting this opportunity to me, I am an avid listener, and will continue to be.

Unfortunately, my vision had been a problem from a very early age. I got my first pair of glasses at 10 and moved to contact lenses by 12. My contact prescription eventually stabilized at -5.5 in both eyes. I was legally blind and I couldn't read the large red digital numbers on my alarm clock each morning. Because my vision was so poor, I wore my contacts far beyond the 8 hour limit each day. This resulted in several eye infections and the formation of small bumps on the inside of my eye lids. I always knew that I wanted to have lasik surgery when my eyes stopped changing. As much as I wanted the surgery, I also wanted to wait until I felt comfortable with the advances in technology that were continually improving the lasers. Dr. Schanzlin was recommended to me by another physician and after doing my research, I felt very lucky that he was practicing so close by. The Shiley Eye Center exceeded my expectations from the very beginning. My first phone message was returned within 15 minutes and they took care of all of my questions and concerns from that point forward. I had astigmatism in both eyes but the thorough testing before the surgery confirmed that I was an ideal candidate. The surgery was not painful and the recovery went very well. The post-op care was exceptional and I actually enjoyed going in to read the eye charts in the visits that followed. I could see 20/15 the morning after the surgery and over one year later, my vision is stable and clear. I cannot say enough about the care Dr. Schanzlin and his staff provided in making the entire process pleasant and stress-free. If you decide to move forward with lasik eye surgery, you are at the right place.

"I never thought about surgically correcting my eyes until I witnessed my mother's enthusiasm about her new vision," recalls a University of California at San Diego graduate now living in Manhattan Beach .

Active in many sports, he learned his eyeglasses were particularly incompatible with surfing. The most challenging part was catching waves he could barely see. Surfing also served as an impetus to having the procedure performed as soon as possible, since he was leaving shortly for Australia , where surfing was on the itinerary.

Shiley's world renowned LASIK surgeon, Dr. Schanzlin, was his only choice, "I never considered going anywhere else, because I wanted the most competent surgeon doing my procedure," states the former patient.

The day of the surgery he was understandably very nervous, but credits the friendliness and professionalism of LASIK surgeon Dr. Schanzlin and his surgical team with easing any fears. Though his sight was still blurry immediately after the procedure, the next morning he woke up to "fantastic vision!" Not surprisingly, the first thing the avid surfer did was walk out of his Del Mar home and look up and down the street. He knew that just beyond the mundane, but very clear, houses of the neighborhood, was the ocean - his surfing playground.

Sincerely,
Byron

Dr. Schanzlin:
I just want to say thank you for the wonderful job you did on my eyes. I am so happy with my vision. My right eye is absolutely great, and my left eye is getting better every day. I have absolute confidence that I will have the same results with the left eye when it is finished with its healing course.

You and your staff were so considerate and professional. It was a great experience for me, and I have recommended you to some friends who are considering surgery. I am proud to be able to send them to someone like you.

One of the things I really liked was the way you involved me in the surgery, talking me through each step as you performed it. I felt like an active participant, instead of just keeping my eyes on the light, hoping for the best! Another nice touch is being shown the operating room before I went in, and having the equipment that was being used pointed out to me. I felt very confident that I was in good hands.

I also enjoyed the manual that you wrote, and felt very informed ahead of time about all my options. I have passed that on to a co-worker who is interested in surgery.

I have not yet met Alycia, but she deserves special thanks for the contact I have had with her. She has guided me along all the steps I needed to take, returned my calls as promised, followed through with getting my other records, and getting back to me with the results. She is so friendly and courteous, and is a great representative of your staff.

Best of all, I can see without dragging around three pairs of glasses! Thank you again, and I look forward to my next checkup.

Sincerely,
Riley

Dear Dr. Schanzlin,
I wanted to thank you for taking such good care of my eyes when you did my surgery in April. It is such a miracle to be able to wake up in the morning and see! You’re a genius and I’m very thankful to be under your care. Thanks again for your extra special care.

Very Sincerely,
Ami

Dr. Schanzlin,
THANK YOU for the recent enhancement procedure you performed on both of my eyes last Friday, June 1. You may recall; I was the case with the “uncooperative right flap.” The day after surgery my vision in the right eye was a little rough, but it stabilized the next day, and I have never seen more clearly. It was nothing short of amazing. I wanted to thank you again, because, again being 2 years out, it was not a simple procedure. I was impressed with how you used the microscope, and with A VERY STEADY hand, were able to accomplish what few doctors could even begin to attempt. It was after that, I realized what a skilled surgeon you are. I feel very grateful and fortunate you were the one performing the procedure. Now I know why you have such a great reputation. I look forward to seeing you at my follow-up tomorrow AM.

Sincerely,
Jim

Dear Dr. Schanzlin,
Now that I seem to out of the woods, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you, Dr. Abrams and your staff for the professional care, understanding and kindness you showed me. I have and will continue to recommend you to all of my friends who are considering LASIK surgery. I tell them “they could go to anyone, but why not go to the best?” Thank you again for your care and concerns.

Sincerely,
Barbara

Dear Dr. Schanzlin,
Just wanted to let you know that both of my eyes continue to perform beautifully. Thanks so much for all of the time and energy you invested towards making this a reality. I still marvel at the excellent long and short vision, which I love.

Dr. Schanzlin,
I wanted to express my gratitude again, regarding the entire LASIK process. From the examination to the surgery to the follow-up, I had nothing but the utmost confidence in you. My nervousness had nothing to do with you. I’m thrilled to have 20/15 vision in the one eye. Because of the success there, I feel certain I’ll want the other eye done, sooner or later. Thanks again – it’s really life-changing.
