Dr. Schanzlin Donates a Free Surgery to a Military Member
In an effort to help our military families in San Diego, Dr. Schanzlin donated a surgery to a
military member through KOGO’s Project HomeFront. Project HomeFront is a service that Roger
Hedgecock of KOGO AM 600 started to assist military families in need. This year’s lucky winner was
Reid Bushard, a U.S. Navy sailor of nearly 20 years. Reid underwent a Custom PRK procedure at the
end of 2005 and is thrilled with his vision today. To view Reid’s testimonial click here.
Dr. Schanzlin and Roger Hedgecock’s broadcast took place on March 13, 2006
Schanzlin Makes “Top Doctors” List
David J. Schanzlin, M.D., Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology and Director of Keratorefractive Surgery was honored as a San Diego Magazine “Top Doctor” in October 2005 for Ophthalmology. Recipients of this prestigious award include the top five percent of local physicians in their specialty. Dr. Schanzlin has won the “Top Doctors” award in Ophthalmology for three consecutive years. He is one of only thirty doctors to stay on the list for three consecutive years.
Information for the “Top Doctors” list was collected this year by the San Diego County Medical Society and then published in the October 2005 issue of San Diego Magazine. The list is compiled from an extensive poll of local physicians. In the poll, area doctors were asked to vote on who they would want to be treated by, if in need of medical care. The list represents physicians who command the confidence and respect of their San Diego peers.
The Shiley Eye Center is pleased to have Dr. Schanzlin included in San Diego Magazine’s “Top Doctors” list.
Schanzlin Receives Jose I. Barraquer Award for Refractive Surgery
Professor
David J. Schanzlin, M.D., Director of Keratorefractive
Surgery at the Shiley Eye Center of University of California,
San Diego received the Jose I. Barraquer Award for 2003.
Each year the International Society of Refractive Surgery
honors an individual who has made significant contributions
in the field of refractive surgery and whose character
exemplifies the scientific dedication of the founding
father of ISRS, Jose I. Barraquer. True to the namesake
of this award, Professor David Schanzlin, M.D. has been
a pioneer in the field of In-tacs (permanently implanted
contact lenses).
Among Dr. Schanzlin’s many honors is the recognition
by his peers as one of the Best Doctors in America,
as the immediate Past President of the International
Society of Refractive Surgery and with membership in
the prestigious American Ophthalmological Society.
As a full-time faculty member at the University of
Southern California, Dr. Schanzlin conducted investigations
on epikeratophakia (66), "the living contact lens"
for the correction of myopia, hyperopia and keratoconus,
injectable intraocular lenses to restore accommodation,
experimental studies with the excimer laser, the use
of Los Alamos thermal keratoplasty to treat keratoconus,
astigmatism and hydrogel synthetic epikeratoplasty.
While at St. Louis University from 1987-1996, Dr. Schanzlin’s
refractive surgery research included clinical investigations
with a refractive picosecond laser and the intracorneal
ring. These clinical studies were backed up by basic
research in the area of the intracorneal ring, the physiology
of excimer laser wound healing, the injectable intraocular
lens, and the restoration of accommodation.
In 1996, Dr. Schanzlin was recruited to return to Southern
California from St. Louis with the challenge of creating
an internationally recognized center of refractive surgery
at the Shiley Eye Center at UCSD in La Jolla. Within
the center, he has created a surgery research unit that
includes clinical studies of LASIK for hyperopia, myopia,
PRK and In-tacs.
Vision for Victory
was a Great Success!
On July 4, 2003, the Shiley Eye Center in La Jolla
announced three winners of the Vision for Victory contest.
Three servicemen and/or their spouses were selected
to receive free Custom LASIK surgery from Dr. David
Schanzlin, Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology, and
Director of the Refractive Surgery Center at the University
of California, San Diego.
All of Shiley Eye Center's refractive surgery winners
have participated in our most recent war, either as
a spouse or service member. We applaud their bravery
and incredible commitment to this country.
2 of our winners are active duty service men:
Charles returned in June from 10 months on the USS
Abraham Lincoln, and Scott is still deployed, 11 months
and counting. His wife sent us his winning application.
Judy's husband was in Iraq for 10 months
All three refractive surgery winners received the brand
new FDA approved Custom LASIK procedure, valued at over
$4,000. Shiley Eye Center is very pleased at the incredible
response we received from the San Diego community. Thanks
to the Roger Hedgecock show and Operation Homefront!
It's been a great effort.
